Before and After – 海野24 umino24 / 一棟貸しの沖縄古民家宿

Before and After

The original cement-tile roof, columns, beams, and roof framework have been preserved, while usable wooden fittings were repaired and reused.
Deteriorated wooden fittings and wooden storm shutters that could no longer be used were newly crafted.
The wooden wall panels were removed and replaced with plaster walls, allowing for natural humidity control and creating a more comfortable living environment.
The result is a space where traditional elements harmonize with modern living, inviting you to relax at ease.

Exterior and Courtyard Design

The original wall, parking area, and gate along the road were removed to secure a spacious parking area.
A Hinpun (screen wall) was built with decorative concrete blocks, and the Nā (courtyard) has been arranged as a calm space where guests can relax while enjoying the view of plants.

Ichiban-jā

In the Ichiban-jā, the damaged storage area and the Tokonoma (Alcove) were rebuilt.
The sliding doors of the storage are decorated with fabric featuring Okinawan patterns, adding an accent to the space.
Lighting with bamboo shades was installed to create a gentle atmosphere, allowing the room to serve as a calm and relaxing bedroom.

Niban-jā

Since the ancestral tablets from the Butsudan (Buddhist altar) in the Niban-jā had been relocated, the space was redesigned as a living room where one can relax in a softly lit atmosphere.
A large sofa and a table with a tabletop remade from reclaimed wood were placed in the room.
The damaged flooring was removed and replaced with a concrete earthen floor. The ceiling was opened up to create greater height, and a loft was added above, giving the room both openness and a playful character.
The textures of wood, concrete, and plaster walls harmonize to create a comfortable and inviting space.

Sanban-jā

In the Sanban-jā, the damaged flooring was removed and replaced with a concrete earthen floor.
To improve flow between the Niban-jā and the kitchen, the storage units were removed, opening up the circulation.
Since this is the first space visible from the entrance, the ceiling was taken out to create a greater sense of openness.
Retro-style cabinetry and small decorative items were added, resulting in a soft and inviting atmosphere.

Uraza or Kucha

The Uraza(or Kucha) was renovated while retaining its original layout.
The damaged walls were removed and replaced with white plaster walls, brightening the room and providing natural humidity control.
As a result, the space became more comfortable and pleasant to live in.

Water Facilities

In traditional Okinawan houses, the main building did not include a toilet, bathroom, or washroom.
To suit modern living and ensure comfort, a compact shower room, toilet, and vanity area have been neatly arranged in the Uraza behind the Sanban-jā.

Shimu (Kitchen)

The kitchen originally had a raised floor, which made the ceiling feel low and the space cramped.
By removing the floor and converting it into a concrete slab, access to the Niban-jā and the Sanban-jā became easier, creating a smoother and more comfortable flow.
Equipped with modern kitchen appliances, the space preserves the atmosphere of a traditional house while offering the convenience of contemporary living.
